Europe's enthralled by U.S. presidential race

When the Pew Global Attitudes Project found that positive opinion of the United States had plunged - in Germany, for example, from 78 percent in 2000 to 30 percent in 2007 - it was often lost that the Germans and other Europeans wished it weren't so.

They liked it better when, as in the '90s, U.S.-European relations were on an upswing. They hoped, without being sure, that much of the transatlantic chill had to do with the specifics of the Bush administration and yearned for a change in course in Washington - which, they understood, would probably require a change of occupants in the White House.

Now that Bush's last days as president are finally in sight, Europeans join many Americans in feeling an intense, almost visceral desire to turn the page and start fresh.

Open Letter To George W. Bush

Your Secretary of Labor ignores it where she does not actually operate to keep it asleep. Yet, on average, every week over 1000 Americans die from the workplace exposures.

Under the Reagan Administration, the White House rejected an urgent request by the physicians at the Centers for Disease Control for a three million dollar budget to send certified letters to 250,000 workers found in a lengthy field study to be exposed to significant hazards-chemical and particulate-in their factories, foundries and mines. The letters were to urge the workers to have their doctors check them out for actual or incipient diseases. Instead, the workers were left defenseless.

Last week, an explosive fireball imploded the century-old Dixie Crystal sugar refinery in Port Wentworth, Georgia, taking, at latest count, seven lives and causing many serious injuries.

I do think that when he makes a mistake, it's pretty glaring. The Chicago game was one he'd like to forget, although those were two plays in which more was involved. On the first one, Jackman had trouble settling the puck at the blue line because of the bad ice conditions and got beat on a breakaway. The second one, that was a fairly wicked pass that Manny sent his way. I don't know how much of a chance Jackman had to handle it. As far as Jackman on the PP, you probably won't see him with the No. 1 unit again if he's on any unit. First of all, the main reason he was out there was because Eric Brewer and Erik Johnson were hurt earlier this season. Secondly, Jackman had 19 assists in the final 40 games last year, and the Blues thought his offense was growing. I think they realize now he's better suited for 5 on 5 and PK.

Santa Rosa neighborhood goes dry

No drinking, bathing, clothes washing or cooking with the tap water, residents of the Bennett Ridge area were told, bringing a massive inconvenience and a possible health concern now nearly a week old.

Some residents said they left for motels or homes of relatives and friends to make due. Others were off to gyms for showers and to the laundromat for their clothes.

"People are very agitated and upset," said Robin Levander, who lives in the neighborhood with her husband and two children.

"You can't cook. Your basic household functions are on hold. You appreciate how important water is," she said.

The problem became evident the evening of Feb. 21 when resident Pam Fike found her tap water smelled like creosote, she said.

She called the Bennett Ridge Mutual Water Co., which serves homes on Old Bennett Ridge and Bardy and Rollo roads, a picturesque neighborhood overlooking parts of southeast Santa Rosa.

Youth Day crowds safe from toxins: authority

A SITE contaminated with underground toxins will be the venue for the arrival and official welcome of the Pope on his first mission of spreading the faith to Australian Catholics.

The Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority has given assurances that any contamination is subterranean, has been contained and will not impinge on the safety of participants in World Youth Day.

Chemicals such as cyanide, benzene, copper and lead were identified on the site two years ago by the Department of Environment and Climate Change.

The department found that the poisons, as a result of the former gasworks in the area, posed a significant risk to human health. The department has declared the area on Hickson Road, which includes the Barangaroo site, an investigation area under the Contaminated Land Management Act.
